Maybe I didn’t treat you
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn’t love you
Quite as often as I could have
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mindAlways on My Mind

Country music singer-songwriter Wayne Carson Thompson (1943-2015) penned “The Letter”, “Neon Rainbow” and “Soul Deep”, three of the biggest hits of the ‘60s band The Box Tops. An international hit in 1967, “The Letter” reached and retained Billboard’s #1 position for four weeks. “Soul Deep” peaked at Billboard’s #3 in 1969. Both songs have been covered numerous times by a variety of well-known artists, most notably Joe Cocker’s bluesy rock take on “The Letter”. Carson is best known, however, for co-writing “Always On My Mind”, a song that has been covered by over 300 artists including hit covers by Gwen McCrae, Brenda Lee, Elvis Presley, The Pet Shop Boys, but is best known for Willie Nelson’s Grammy Award winning version in 1982. In 1997, Carson was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame.
